I have had my head down, hard at work on my children’s book and another illustration project that I will reveal soon! This is Morley the mouse who very adventurous and loves to explore all kinds of adventures! His sisters, Lavender and Pinkney often find themselves wondering if Morley will be able to get himself out of some of the circumstances his curiousity gets him entangled in!
Children's Book Illustration c.Pamela Campbell Bickford
I’m moving along with the illustration of my first author/illustrator book, one that I finished before Christmas, and after Christmas! Each image represents 2 pages of the book and this is my coprighted work, so please do not copy and repost without permission. Using watercolor, colored pencil and micron pen (ink). Morley ( after my father, and a good Scottish name) and Pinkney are so much fun to paint!
Children's Book Illustrations Double Page Spread
I just completed the Picture Book Illustration Course online with Nina Rycroft of Aukland, New Zealand! I am working on my own story inspired by three little mouse charaters inspired by myplay and storytelling with my granddaughter. During my career as an educator, I was an elementary music specialist most of my career, but also spent 12 years teaching primary classroom, grades K, 1, and 2. I have read hundreds, if not thousands of picture books, and now am so excited to be working on one of my own. This is one of my first double page spreads introducing my main characters Morely, Lavender, and Pinkney.

Whimsical, Post 12, Creating Characters
Rough sketching for character development for my first children’s book! Letting you see the rough sketchtes in blue pencil, then inking over them with some changes to see where to go next with them. Lots of work ahead, but such fun work!
Whimsical, Post 11, Acrylic Play
This “whimsical challenge” was to play with acrylic paints without drawing the image in pencil first!
Whimsical, Post 10, Illustration Face Shapes with Nina Rycroft
I am warming up for a Picture Book Illustration Course with Illustrator, Nina Rycroft, which starts next week. This is the homework for her class on creating character faces using 9 different face shapes!
Whimsical, Post 9, Studying Illustrator, Cyndy Zekeres
This is my practice (study) of illustrations by Cyndy Zekeres, from the book, “AChild’s First Book Of Nusery Rhymes” selected and adapted by Selma G. Lanes, C. 1983. I love her illustration style which is similar to my sketchbooking style with pen, ink, and watercolor, but she also adds colored pencil. These little sketches were a fun way to explore her style and to inspire my own illustration goals.
Whimsical, Post 8, Study of illustrator, Brian Price Thomas
A little study I painted in my sketchbook of a piece by illustrator Brian Price Thomas, from the book My Honey Bear’s Book of Rhymes.
Whimsical, Post 7, Playing with layers and acrylic paints
I am a watercolor artists, but have enjoyed exploring some other mediums this summer including layers and acrylics!
Commision of "Mimi and Rudi" complete and headed to it's new home! What a joy to paint some furry friends!
Whimsical, Post 6, Study
I have been doing studies of illustrationers who have styles similar to mine. This is a composite I did from two illustrations by Brian Price Thomas. Studying the work of other artists is a great way to grow and learn.
Whimsical, Post 5, Confetti Dress Mouse
Trying more ways of doing whimsical with paper collage, water color, colored pencil, and pen and ink!
Whimsical, Post 4, Chubby Bumblebee
This chunky bumblebee is a play with acrylic paints that I had in a lesson taught by Micki Wilde. This was so much fun! This was an online course I found on Sketchbook Skool called Whisical Sketching. I've always loved bumblebees keeping me company in the garden!
Whisical, Post 3, Tea Party Celebrations
We celebrated our granddau 3rd birthday with an Alice In Wonderland themed birthday party and then had tea out later in the week to celebrate my mother's upcoming birthday. I have so many wonderful memories with family and friends around having tea together! Cheers!

Whimsical, Post 1
I am in between travel sketchbooks right now, so that I would share some of the playing that I have been doing this summer in the Whimsical Genre. My granddaughter is turning 3 next week. She loves hearing stories and telling stories, animals of all sorts, so I thought it would be fun to explore some illustrations of the animals we imagine in out stories. Mice are a favorite!
Moselle and Rhine Rivers Sketchbook, Post 11, Basel, Switzerland
Basel, Switzerland
This is the last post for Moselle and Rhine Rivers sketchbook! We ended our river cruise in Basel, a rather large city which was a mixture of old and new in close proximity to one another. The old town square had an outdoor market with all of the great farm products of the surrounding region, the beautiful town hall and mordern tstreetcars, and shops all mixed together. The last cathedral we visited was a protestant one verlooking the Rhine River with beautiful views from the outside garden and this blue sheep art installation inthe inner courtyard. I loved the black, white, blue and red graphic prints on these mannequins in the windows of Dolce & Cabbana, and this Cartier sign that was hanging ourside the shop for watches. Basel is a very beautiful, bright, and energetic city to visit!
Moselle and Rhine Rivers Sketchbook, Post 10, Strasbourg, France
Grand Isle in the center of the Old Historic Town Center of Strasbourg has beautiful views, old timbered medieval buildings and a great market place for tasting cheese, brioche, meats, wines, and beatiful flowers! Storks are a symbol of the Alsace Region of France and nest in trees lining the residential areas of Alsace. You can see these nests in tree after tree, one after another, on roofs and on chimney tops! They symbolize happiness faithfulness, and good luck, and fertility. Storks migrate from Africa to winter in the Alsace region. Strasbourg was first mentioned in 12 BC, and over the past 2,000 years it has been influenced by both French and German cultures as power has passes back and forth from one side of the Rhine River to the other. It's a beautiful blend of cultures!
